HOW MUCH’ IS YOUR FABRIC WORTH?
This is truly a worthwhile question for you to answer, since most fabrics and felts represent a major investment expense for a company. In one large mill alone, the main wet-end fabric cost is around $70,000, without having to consider the labour of about four hours to replace it. Add to that the total cost of lost production while changing the fabric and getting back into the ‘groove’ after having changed it. Even with very accurate felt guiding systems, the inevitable will sometimes happen. The guiding palm could hang up or some rolls develop a buildup of stock, causing rapid uneven movement of the fabric. With the very high speeds the machines are now running, it doesn’t take very long a wild fabric to move a couple of inches one way or another to meet its death. You must agree, with all things considered, the total cost of a large lost fabric or felt could very easily climb well above a grand total of AT LEAST $100,000.
A totally new means of prevention is now available in the form of an ‘early warning’ alarm. This new system works on top of / instead of your presently employed guiding system. Since every second is important, it informs the operator of an impending problem before it has even moved. He can then react quicker to address the situation and take corrective measures. This system is available in the form of an ‘add-on’ to your existing guiding methods or into your DCS system, if one exists. Both methods are very capable, while the DCS version is perhaps the most versatile from the practicality side. The optimum means of protection for the whole plant would be from the use of an ‘early warning’ system on each fabric or felt. When operational, the alarming could be used for a warning or whatever action is deemed necessary to save it. Take note, that this system is an empirical solution that has been proven to be a very worthwhile investment for the life of the plant.
